Ryan Wins Stage 3 of Tour of Ulster

The Tour of Ulster started today in the Moy with 75.8 miles to cover over 7 laps of a 10 mile circuit. Shortly after the start 9 riders moved clear, they were Mark O’Callaghan (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Anthony Walsh (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles Omagh), Chris McGlinchey (Cycling Ulster), Lindsay Watson (Cycling Ulster), David McFall (Omagh Wheelers Cycling Club), Robert Jon McCarthy (Team Monaghan), David Watson (The Bike House CC) and Ian Richardson (UCD Cycling Club).

Robert Jon McCarthy (Team Monaghan) who was sitting in 2nd place overall was in the lead group and their advantage increased to 56 seconds after 20 miles covered, putting McCarthy (Team Monaghan) the virtual race leader on the road. At this point Ian Richardson (UCD Cycling Club) sat up from the lead group to go back to the main field to assist the chase with his team mate and race leader Eoin Morton (UCD Cycling Club).

The 8 leaders increased their lead to over 1 minute after 28 miles covered, but then the main field started to chase hard.

After 40 miles covered David McFall (Omagh Wheelers Cycling Club) got dropped from the lead group, and at this point the lead was 39 seconds.

The main field then stalled and the lead increased back to 59 seconds for the 7 leaders.

For the next 20 miles the gradually dropped until the leaders were caught with 8 miles to go

14 riders moved clear whuch included 2nd overall again Robert Jon McCarthy (Team Monaghan). The rest of the group were Matteo Cigala (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Conor McCann (Caldwell Cycles Omagh), Marc Potts (Cycling Ulster), Craig Rea (Phoenix CC), Conn McDunphy (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club), Dermot Trulock (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club), Mark Dowling (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), James Davenport (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), Michael Fitzgerald (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), David Brody (Team iTAP), Keith Fox (Team Planet X Carnac), Toni Ballester Llobera (Team Sportactive Racing) andLewis Ferguson (The Bike House CC). the maximum advantage they got was 14 seconds, Kevin McKinney (CCT) & Robin Kelly (Waterford Racing Club) also joined the lead group.

But the race came together with 2km to go, and Simon Ryan (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team won the bunch sprint to take the final stage.

Eoin Morton (UCD Cycling Club) retained his overall lead to win the 2017 race.

Morton Wins Stage 2 of Tour of Ulster

The Tour of Ulster started today in the Moy with 90.8 miles to cover. By the time the race reached the 1st KOH of the day at 7.7 miles covered a 5 man group had a 19 second lead over the main field. The group consisted of Marc Potts (Cycling Ulster), Lindsay Watson (Cycling Ulster), James Davenport (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), Adam Stenson (TEAM BIKEWORX Celbridge) & Cian O’Reilly (UCD Cycling Club).

When the race reached the 2nd KOH at Newry the leaders had being joined by more riders and had a 23 second lead over the main field. The 9 man group consisted of Marc Potts (Cycling Ulster), Lindsay Watson (Cycling Ulster), Gareth McKee (Newry Wheelers CC), Mark Dowling (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), James Davenport (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), Adam Stenson (TEAM BIKEWORX Celbridge), Robert Jon McCarthy (Team Monaghan), Cian O’Reilly (UCD Cycling Club) & Eoin Morton (UCD Cycling Club).

The 9 leaders stayed away until the 4th KOH of the day at Spelga, at this point the race blew completely apart.

After the descent Robert Jon McCarthy (Team Monaghan) & Eoin Morton (UCD Cycling Club) attacked and this move was to stay away until the end of the stage. They were being chased by Marc Potts (Cycling Ulster) & Chris McGlinchey (Cycling Ulster) who were 28 seconds behind, with 50 seconds back to the remains of the main field.

Eventually a 19 man chase group formed behind the 2 leaders after the 2 chasers were absorbed. This group consisted of the Ronan McLaughlin (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Seán Lacey (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Mark O’Callaghan (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles Omagh), Conor McCann (Caldwell Cycles Omagh), Craig McAuley (Caldwell Cycles Omagh), Kevin McKinney (CCT), Liam Dolan (Cuchulainn CC), Chris McGlinchey (Cycling Ulster), Des Woods (Newry Wheelers CC), Ben Joughin (Newry Wheelers CC), Gary Donaldson (Omagh Wheelers Cycling Club), Craig Rea (Phoenix CC), Dermot Trulock (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club), Mark Dowling (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), Adam Stenson (TEAM BIKEWORX Celbridge), Keith Finn (Team Planet X Carnac), Cian O’Reilly (UCD Cycling Club) & Louis Carnec (UCD Cycling Club).

The 2 leaders lead stretched to over 2 minutes, but Eoin Morton (UCD Cycling Club) had a rear wheel puncture with just over 18km to go. Robert Jon McCarthy (Team Monaghan) waited for Morton after his puncture and the 2 riders stayed together until the finish where Morton outsprinted McCarthy to take the stage win.

Eoin Morton (UCD Cycling Club) is now the new race leader.

The leader of the King of the Hills competition after day 2 is Eoin Morton (UCD Cycling Club).

The stage tomorrow starts at The Square, Moy (09.50 am) and finishing at The Square, Moy (12.40pm), this 70.6 mile stage is another tough stage with 6 climbs on route.

AmberGreen Energy Tour of Ulster 2017
O’Mahony Wins Stage 1 of Tour of Ulster

The Tour of Ulster started this year in the in Moy, Robert Jon McCarthy (Team Monaghan) was the first attacker, but was caught soon after. After a flurry of attacks a of 9 man lead group established a 15 second lead by the time the race entered Cookstown with 15 miles covered. They were Matteo Cigala (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Ronan McLaughlin (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Anthony Walsh (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Jamie Blanchfield (Carrick Wheelers Cycling Club), Marc Potts (Cycling Ulster), Mark Dowling (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), Adam Stenson (TEAM BIKEWORX Celbridge), Robert Jon McCarthy (Team Monaghan) and Ian Richardson (UCD Cycling Club).

By the time 19 miles were covered, the race was all together.

Eoin Morton (UCD Cycling Club) was the next to attack the main field with 8 riders in pursuit. They were Sean Yelverton (Carrick Wheelers Cycling Club), Angus Fyffe (Cycling Ulster), Lindsay Watson (Cycling Ulster), Craig Rea (Phoenix CC), Conn McDunphy (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club), Dermot Trulock (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club), James Davenport (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team) and Cian O’Reilly (UCD Cycling Club).

By the time the race reached the 1st KOH of the day at 24 miles covered the 9 leaders had come together.

By the 4th KOH of the day with 54 miles covered the 9 leaders had over a 1 minute lead, but the main field behind were starting to split under the pressure being applied.
Cian O’Reilly (UCD Cycling Club) and Sean Yelverton (Carrick Wheelers Cycling Club) were dropped from the lead group on the climb.

Conn McDunphy (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club) then attacked out of the lead group and his lead grew to 35 seconds, but behind the 6 chaser had being joined by 15 riders to forma 21 man chase group. The consisted of Matteo Cigala (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Seán Lacey (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Liam Dolan (Cuchulainn CC), Angus Fyffe (Cycling Ulster), Lindsay Watson (Cycling Ulster), Jude Sands (Newry Wheelers CC), Javan Nulty (North Down CC), Craig Rea (Phoenix CC), Dermot Trulock (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club), James Davenport (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), Simon Ryan (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), Toni Ballester Llobera (Team Sportactive Racing), Eoin Morton (UCD Cycling Club), Louis Carnec (UCD Cycling Club), Shane Power (Waterford Racing Club), Dermot Trulock (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club), Mark O’Callaghan (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles Omagh), Jamie Blanchfield (Carrick Wheelers Cycling Club), Chris McGlinchey (Cycling Ulster), David Watson (The Bike House CC) and Darragh O’Mahony (Waterford Racing Club).

But with 15 miles to go 6 riders caught the lone leader. Matteo Cigala (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Seán Lacey (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Chris McGlinchey (Cycling Ulster), Dermot Trulock (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club), Eoin Morton (UCD Cycling Club) and Darragh O’Mahony (Waterford Racing Club).

This was to be the race winning move with Darragh O’Mahony (Waterford Racing Club) taking the stage.

The leader of the King of the Hills competition after day 1 is Dermot Trulock (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club).

The stage tomorrow starts at The Square, Moy (09.45 am) and finishing at The Square, Moy (1.30pm), and with the race going through the Mournes this 91.7 mile stage is another tough stage with 6 climbs on route.

This May Bank Holiday weekend see’s the return of the ‘AmberGreen Tour of Ulster’ to the village of Moy in County Tyrone which will host the start and finish of all 3 stages, from 29th April to 1st May 2017.

The AmberGreen Tour of Ulster is one of Ireland’s longest established races.
Established in 1957, the race is attracting elite riders from across Ireland & the UK.

Neil O’Brien, Chairman of the host company, AmberGreen, said he is delighted to be involved with the ‘AmberGreen Tour of Ulster’ following the success of last year’s event.
“We are delighted to take this opportunity to show our commitment to the people of Northern Ireland and to begin a long-term relationship with Ireland’s most famous cycling race.

Garry Nugent, Event Director, said that he is thrilled to see the return of the 2017 AmberGreen Tour of Ulster to the Moy and welcomes on board new sponsorship for the classified jerseys from, JMW Farms for the Points Jersey, Powerhouse Sports for the KOH Jersey and Moy Auto Services for the Young Rider Jersey.

The first stage of this year’s AmberGreen Tour of Ulster departs from the Moy in County Tyrone at Midday, covering over 90 miles and 6 categorised climbs. The race makes its way through the rolling roads of Stewartstown and Cookstown before the first KOH of the day at Pomeroy and then on to Ballygawley with another Category 3 climb on the way. Turning off the main Ballygawley-Omagh road, the race heads towards the first Category 1 climb at Sion Finn Mountain – a 4 mile pull to the summit. It’s a fast descent from here into Fivemiletown, Clogher and Augher before reaching Aughnacloy. The next Categorised climb is a Category 2 at Rehargy Road, a 3 mile long drag to the top. Stiloga Road is the final Category 2 climb of Stage 1 and ramps up very steeply from the main road at 85 miles in. The riders will pass through Benburb and Blackwatertown, finish back in the Square in the Moy at around 3pm.

Stage 2 departs at the earlier time of 10am for almost 100 miles heading South towards Armagh and Newry taking in the first 2 Categorised climbs of a total of 6 for the day before the 25 mile mark at Newry. In Newry, we follow out to Hilltown, riders will take on the first Category 1 climb of the day at Spelga – a 2.1 mile long climb to the top before descending back towards Hilltown. The riders will then make their way to Rathfriland and Banbridge and meander the way around the County Down countryside. The final Categorised climb of the day is at 80 miles just after Tandragee, after which it will be a fast run into the finish in the Moy for around 1.15pm.

Stage 3 departs at the earlier time of 10am and is a 10 mile circuit covered 7 times. The circuit itself starts along the Gorestown Road, and takes a left onto the B130 Derryfubble Road making its way to Benburb. The race then takes a left onto the Confeacle Road running through Blackwatertown and back onto the A29 on heading into the Moy. The KOH will be in the village each time but not on the finish line.

Fyffe Wins Stage 1 of Tour of Ulster

The Tour of Ulster started this year in the in Moy, and after a flurry of attacks and 3 KOH climbs the race was all together as they reach the Cat 1 climb outside Fintona. The race split on the climb with 3 leaders going clear Mark Dowling (Asea Wheelworx), Eoin Morton (UCD FitzCycles) & Seán Lacey (Team Aquablue) going clear and chased by 6 riders at 18 seconds Christopher McGlinchey (Ballymoney CC Biesty’s Centra), Craig McAuley (Caldwell Cycles Omagh), Ronan McLaughlin (Foyle Racing Team), Ryan Reilly (Foyle Racing Team), Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles Omagh) & Conor Hennebry (Team Aquablue) and a further 2 chasers at 30 seconds are Marcus Christie (Omagh Wheelers CC) & Angus Fyffe (Omagh Wheelers CC) with the main field at 55 seconds.

After 66 miles of racing the front 3 groups merged and stayed together until the second last climb 78 miles and 7 riders went clear Mark Dowling (Asea Wheelworx), Christopher McGlinchey (Ballymoney CC Biesty’s Centra), Craig McAuley (Caldwell Cycles Omagh), Angus Fyffe (Omagh Wheelers CC), Conor Hennebry (Team Aquablue), Seán Lacey (Team Aquablue) & Eoin Morton (UCD FitzCycles).

This group worked well together until 500 metres to go when Eoin Morton (UCD FitzCycles) attacked but was caught in the final few metres and Angus Fyffe (Omagh Wheelers CC) outsprinted the rest of the group to win the stage and take the first leaders jersey.

The leader of the King of the Hills competition after day 1 is Mark Dowling (Asea Wheelworx).

The stage tomorrow starts at The Square, Moy (09.45 am) and finishing at The Square, Moy (1.30pm), and with the race going through the Mournes this 93.5 mile stage is another tough stage with 6 climbs on route.

Richardson Wins Stage 2 of Tour of Ulster

The Tour of Ulster started today in the Moy with 96.2 miles to cover. By the time the race reached the first KOH of the day at 9.6 miles covered a 16-man group had a 35 second lead over the main field. The group consisted of Mark Dowling (Asea Wheelworx), Bryan McCrystal (Asea Wheelworx), Christopher McGlinchey (Ballymoney CC Biesty’s Centra), James Curry (Banbridge Cycling Club), Gareth McKee (Banbridge Cycling Club), Lindsay Watson (Banbridge Cycling Club), Niall O’Gorman (Belfast Select), Joseph McCrory (Carn Wheelers), John Clarke (Cycling Leinster), Ryan Reilly (Foyle Racing Team), David Watson (North Down CC), David McFall (Omagh Wheelers CC), Seán Lacey (Team Aquablue), Sean McKenna (Team Aquablue), Ian Richardson (UCD FitzCycles) & Roger Aiken (Dunboyne Cycling Club). This group was to stay away until the finish.

Over the 1st climb at Spelga with 40.1 miles covered the lead group split, but regrouped on the descent with the exception of David McFall (Omagh Wheelers CC), the main field was a further 2 minutes back, but by the time the race reached the 5th KOH of the day the main field was over 5 minutes back and out of contention.

With 60 miles cover Christopher McGlinchey (Ballymoney CC Biesty’s Centra) punctured out of the lead group but quickly rejoined. With 70 miles covered Bryan McCrystal (Asea Wheelworx) also punctured out of the lead group, but he also quickly rejoined.

With 5km to go Ian Richardson (UCD FitzCycles) attached and held off the remainder of the group to take the stage win.

Conor Hennebry (Team Aquablue) finished 2nd on the stage and is now the new race leader.

The leader of the King of the Hills competition after day 2 is Gareth McKee (Banbridge Cycling Club).

The stage tomorrow starts at The Square, Moy (09.45 am) and finishing at The Square, Moy (12.40pm), this 71.5 mile stage is another tough stage with 6 climbs on route.

Christie Wins Stage 3 of Tour of Ulster

The Tour of Ulster started today in the Moy with 75.8 miles to cover over 7 laps of a 10 mile circuit. Shortly after the start Eoin Morton (UCD FitzCycles), Ronan McLaughlin (Foyle Racing Team) & Marcus Christie (Omagh Wheelers CC) attacked and quickly opened up a gap. They were joined by Sean Noon (Foyle Racing Team), Angus Fyffe (Omagh Wheelers CC) after 32 miles covered and this was to prove to be the decisive move that would stay away until the finish. The gap never went above 30 seconds.

Marcus Christie (Omagh Wheelers CC) attacked in the last km to hold off the lead group and take the stage.

Eoin Morton (UCD FitzCycles) claimed first place on all 6 KOH primes to take the KOH competition from Gareth McKee (Banbridge Cycling Club) the overnight leader.

Conor Hennebry (Team Aquablue) retained his overall lead to win the 2016 race.
